Linux and Security: Tools, Threats and Opportunities

Abstract:
Linux is becoming a major player in servers operating system market. IBM's recent commitment had bring a lot of new equipment into Linux scope. One of the main issues is how Linux is prepared to face this new challenges. Developed through Internet, in a decentralized way, one can asks how secure it can be.
This presentation focus on Linux security. Namely, about its critical factors, technical issues and functional advantages. It will also be introduced some of the tools available to implement secure policies and platforms for network administration under Linux.
Bio:
Paulo Trezentos has graduated in Computer Sciences and Business Management from ISCTE - Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa in 1999, and is presently taking is MSc in Computer Engineering in IST, Technical University of Lisbon.
In 1998, he was the main System Administrator at Moderna University for a year, also responsible for the communications. Since 1999 he is Assistant Professor at ISCTE teaching the disciplines "Operating Systems"and "Computer Architectures"
Paulo Trezentos has joined ADETTI - a Portuguese research center where he is currently senior researcher- in 1997, working since then in parallel processing and operating systems field. During that time, he participated in several European RTD Projects such as OPIMA, OCTALIS and OCCAMM. He is also a participant in Global Grid Forum meetings and the European DataGrid project.
At ADETTI he had build a Beowulf cluster and developed applications with PVM and MPI. Some of the applications are free available.
Paulo Trezentos is the author of the book "Fundamental do Linux" (edit FCA, Lisboa 2000, ISBN 972-722-215-3), as well as numerous technical and dissemination articles.
