Changing Yottabytes of Data Into Confetti and Trying to Successfully Reassemble It

Mr. Aaron Cain
The Performance Edge (2.3A)

Abstract:
We have progressed past the stage where mainframe TCP/IP implementations are being prototyped, and have moved beyond the first 'Terminal Only' TCP/IP implementation projects. Now, the use of TCP/IP to move major quantities of data throughout the enterprise has become the norm, and the real problems of data volume are starting to rear their ugly heads.

This presentation goes beyond the theoretical approach to implementing TCP/IP networks and the pilot web-enabled application projects, to discuss the real implications of moving enterprise data across large Intranet and Internet networks. Much of the information in this presentation comes from information observed in the field throughout EMEA and the rest of the world. As a former performance specialist with Landmark Systems Corporation, and then with ASG, Aaron has had a unique vantage point to observe projects from inception, through prototyping and then to full production implementation.

In this presentation we will discuss:
- Basic TCP/IP environmental components, and how they can be tuned to maximise data throughput
- The impact of web-enabling legacy applications:
o Adding volumes of users to application workloads
o Moving volumes of data through networks designed to handle terminal traffic
o The impact of load balancing web-servers
- Timing data movements through segments of the TCP/IP network, and how to avoid 'white noise'
- Where application data spends it's time, prior to being put 'on the wire'

Bio:
Aaron Cain is the Managing Director of The Performance Edge Limited. Aaron has spent the last 4 years working in EMEA, first for Landmark Systems EMEA as their senior technical support resource in the field, and he then went on to work with ASG in a similar role. Now with the founding of a new company specialising in performance management consulting, technology training, and software support and distribution, Aaron is putting together a world-wide alliance of companies and technicians to service the IT industries needs.

Aaron is IBM Certified in both MQSeries and DB2 UDB V6 and V7, and has taught TCP/IP concepts as part of CISCO's certification training program for the British Armies technology transfer programme. He specialises in managing and tuning OS390 and z/OS UNIX Systems Services for maximising data movement in DB2, MQSeries, and TCP/IP while minimising resource consumption.
