Millipede A Storage Revolution
Dr. Hugo E. Rothuizen
IBM Research Laboratory Zurich (1.8A)
Abstract:
This presentation gives an overview of a new data storage technique based on topographical modifications of a polymer surface, as opposed to using magnetic thin films. While still in a research stage, this scanning probe-based storage concept is promising for the high areal density it can achieve, a small device form factor suitable for mobile applications, and the potentially low manufacturing cost of its micromechanical parts
Bio:
Hugo Rothuizen received a PhD. degree in applied physics from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1994. Since becoming a Research Staff Member at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory in 1996, he has worked on the design, modelling, and fabrication of micromechanical sensors and
actuators for data storage applications.
